Maya and Me
Maya's credence at writing and narrating in envious. Her ability to unlock the tendernest moments of her life is admirable. And I as a writer could forlong never experience it.
I feel somehow guilty of saying this, and airing out all my grievences on my readers and Maya ."I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings ",is a complex piece of literature , where we become situated in andamoral position. We don't know if we should laugh with the narrator, or be guilted by our complacency.
Should we turn to the next page , and be faced with Maya's reality with her poignant experiences or should we delay the candour of this little child, and hope that little one will bear her life better than us?
Ultimately we choose to linger at the shores of May and the super detailled and bustling aquarium of her life. Each stop is chronologiseds.Even the smallest details, are painted with such fine brushstrokes, that it makes you think how was she able to remember all of this.
But then again, her time at Momma's store , probably equipped her with the knowledge of memorising people and locking theri facial expressions and desires in a safe deposit . Mrs flower Literary Fairy , have probably given a tip or two to on how to handle her ferocious life.
Flying away from the stores of Stamps, to meet the locket monster , in her books.May's chose to plough own kind of narrative, to bear her own kind of pain, to chose her own kind of lie.
We understaad through the devastating meeting at her high-school graduation, how tenacious Maya's spirit is .She has big dreams, and whims. She thinks independantly, and sovereignly.
She oftten undertakes life from a literary perspective , convulting her experience them with stories she read.In that way , she pacifies herself from the harshness of her status .From the racist echoes that hover over head at all times.
From the many and many restrictions disposed at her.So when , in a final act of reitlation against "Dolores" her father's "girl friend", she isn't simply defending her mom's honour or lashing out.Or satisfying an ego-centric nerve This is Maya's moment of "letting go",of finally pushing back , and wining back the narrative of her life.
And indeed, each moment after this seems like a natural escapade for Maya. Each moment she's letting gi and experiencing new type of freedoms, new movements of consciousness and growth.
Until the ultimate" letting go", of one's fears and expectation through the act of intercourse at the end.
We here leave Maya at the age of 16 , at the end of the 36th chapter of the book. Here Maya has given birth , and a life of hopefulness and aspiration is awaiting her.
Maya is still harboured by her dreaminess and almost Quixotic tendencies. The act of birth , seemed to be only a completion of the arck of a heroine.A distant manoeuver even. She confesses it to be easy and not as troublesome as one would think. But despite Maya's forceful strong facade we learn that she is afraid of crushing her" new baby".That all in all, Maya herself is still a child .A rear bearing child that is in desperate need of mother , mentorship and a good bed time story.
That all in all , we share Maya's fears , and insecurity. We may nevrr get the full grass of her experiences, but we all so feal grateful for her intimacy, and the affective words of her narration. The world seems to us almost , like a confessional booth, where barely see one another, but the invisible veil is lifted.
