The Last Man by Mary Shelley
As a an avid fan of Romanticism, this book was definitely a ride.Let me start by prefacing that I found the start of the book , to be breathtaking and otherworldly. The ethereal descriptions, the outpouring of emotions, the heartfelt relationships, were so enamouring to me as a reader
.I felt bad for our narrator , his family and prince Adrian.Their descent into an apocalyptic world, was distraughting, but not as much as I thought it would be.The big twist, didn't lay such an impact on my psyche.I definitely felt more threatened by the plot of White Noise than this one.I'm aware that they are uncomparable , and standalone novels of different eras ,with differentaudiences in mind. But I couldn't help but adress the similarities.
Now back to Mary Shelley, again she had so many things on her plate.Trying to balance the political misfunctionning of her world, a plague , and character development. Those are quite some tasking missions for any writer to take on, let alone for someone who was pioneering the genre.
Yes, at times the novel felt like took an eternity to get to the next action. We could get glimpses at the scene, but never been able to attach ourself to it it's weird.I don't know how to decsirbe it.But at times, I could synergise with the characters emotions, and afflictions, while other times I was totally aloof to them. The actions, got pretty repetitive midway, I've still yet to finish, so maybe I'm up to a surprise
I think this could be in part explained to how passionate she was about the project. She was most likely carried away, by the feverish dream that she has witnessed while on a cave expeditionAs such the novel is quite verbose .Which lends it this tenacious reputation to been daunting and long to read. On the other side ,I think that it's important to tackle this book from her perspective .Imagine being so enthralled by the subject you're studying.Your mind, is toiling day at night, to come closer to the truth of it, the full picture. You can't help but write everything down to the smallest details, the uncnsequentional ones .It becomes a matter of life and death. The mind , is a complex agent, and more often than not, we urged to submit its tyrannical forces .So Shelley, and Shelley's mind thank you for this complex and magnifiying piece of literature. It was ,and still is a groundbreaking work, a tad bit long but still great.
You see,I enjoyed some of its politics , and seeing the moral derision behind it.The fight for thrones, and the afflictions it lays on those before you .Yet what I loved most, is how Mary was able to decrypt the human psyche and touch its core. How terror , could bring out the best or the worst in human nature.
We recent witnesses of this , could attest to this behaviour. So , I think I will finish reading it.See what Mary, has in stores for us the next 60 years.Let's hope in ends happily.
